Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Yinnietharra Station; Yinnetharra Station
A large cattle station approximately 204,341 hectares (2,043 sq.km) with some complex Precambrian high-grade metamorphic rocks, including pegmatites, corundum and tourmaline deposits.
This pegmatite and mineral deposit field is 165 kilometres by dirt road from Carnarvon. While most are on Yinnietharra Station, some of the outlying deposits are found on neighbouring Mt Phillip, Eudamulla, Bidgemia, and Mooloo Downs Stations. There are around twenty major named sites for minerals in the region, although the total list would be far longer. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential, as well as being self-sufficient, as the region is arid, lacks fresh water, and is remote.
Mining for muscovite used in the electrical industry occurred on Yinnietharra station at several sites between 1922 and 1946, beryl and columbite from 1942 to 1965, and gem specimen mining after this till around 1990. Minor rare earth, uranium bearing and lithium minerals are present but have never been mined to any extent. No mining on the field has been large scale.
The Gascoyne Complex is a deformed Archaean basement, with younger sediments deposited on top of it. It was deformed by the collision of the Yilgarn and Pilbara Cratons. These rocks were metamorphosed to gneisses, schists and migmatites, forming slightly younger granites that intruded into the sequence. The rocks were subject to 630-770 degrees Celsius, and 650-950 MPa pressure. Mineral deposits are widespread but many of the most important tourmaline deposits are centred around the Morrissey Hill area, which forms two north-west trending fields of muscovite and migmatitised schist, within the Morrissey Metamorphic Suite. The pegmatites are simple beryl-columbite class pegmatites.
In Fetherston, J.M., Stocklmayer, S.M., Stocklmayer, V.C. (2017) Gemstones of Western Australia, second edition. Geological Survey of Western Australia, Mineral Resources Bulletin 25, 356 pages, it is reported that:
"At the Yinnetharra North deposit, 1.5 km to the north of the Yinnetharra dravite openpit, schorl or black tourmaline was originally reported. In more recent years, it has been established that all tourmaline in this area is black dravite, with an MgO content of 9.85%. The Yinnetharra North deposit, on former mineral claim MC09/215, is in a black phlogopite schist containing large, euhedral black dravite rhombohedra, many with double terminations and internal zoning visible in thin section. Maximum crystal size is recorded as 60 mm in diameter and 23 cm in length".
