Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Tynaugh Mine; Tynaugh silver mine
A giant, polymetallic deposit discovered in 1961 consisting of 11.8MT of ore grading at 11.5% zinc/lead and 0.6% copper. The mine operated from 1965-1981 predominantly as an opencast pit but some underground workings were developed in the final years.
Mining operations closed in 1981.
A combined-cycle gas turbine power plant was built on a portion of the site in 2006 by Tynagh Energy.
Much of the ore was oxidised and vast quantities of museum-grade azurite, malachite, cerussite, native copper, etc. were processed before collectors finally realised what was happening. By then, most was gone.
The open-cast is now flooded and the tips landscaped with a gas power station having recently been constructed on part of the site.
The few patches which the landscapers have missed have been prolific. Whilst the large, showy pieces are long gone, the site remains a micromounters' paradise. Over 100 species have so far been found, many of them rare arsenates, making this locality one of international importance.
The bulk of the spoil still remains, untouched by recent construction works, however, it has been largely grassed over during site rehabilitation works. The crusher area (which had been one of the most prolific localities) is now completely gone and has been concreted over.
One should note that Tynagh Energy only owns the land on which the power plant is situated and it is completely concreted.
The remainder of the site, which is of interest to collectors, is on Priority Drilling's land.
In 2024 Europa Metals which acquired the mine site has stated that it plans to conduct a feasibility study and apply for an operating licence for a recycling and reclamation project to recover metals from old mining waste and to kick off new mineral exploration in the area.
