Garimpo de Serra Pelada
Sediment-hosted gold-(palladium-platinum) deposit.
The deposit has been intermittently mined from several open pits (including the Serra Pelada, Banana, and Marlon mines) since 1980.
It produced 35.3 metric tons of gold between 1980 and 1985.
The Serra Pelada Gold Mine deposit in Brazil's Carajás Mineral Province is an epigenetic, sediment-hosted bonanza-grade gold, palladium, and platinum accumulation. It is structurally localized within the tight, overturned hinge zone of a regional syncline, where oxidizing metal-bearing fluids mixed with reducing, carbon-rich metasedimentary host rocks. Hosted in sub-greenschist to greenschist facies metasedimentary sequences of the Neoarchean Rio Fresco/Águas Claras Formation.
Lithology: Impure marbles, red meta-siltstones, and carbonaceous/calcareous meta-siltstones. Over 75% of the high-grade ore is restricted to the black, organic-carbon-enriched lower meta-siltstones.
The system is remarkably sulfur-poor, resulting in precious metals precipitating directly as native metals, selenides, arsenides, and complex Au-Pd-Pt alloys rather than typical sulfide ores.
Hydrothermal alteration is characterized by magnetite-hematite hydrothermal breccias, massive hematite metasomatism, intense sericite-kaolin (argillic) alteration, and amorphous silica (jasperoid) envelopes.
The deposit was subjected to deep tropical lateritization spanning over 70 million years, which heavily oxidized near-surface rocks into hydrated iron oxides and secondary clays.
Considered to be an IOCG (iron oxide-copper-gold) style deposit, it is part of the Carajás system.
A current estimated resource, in the unmined portion of the deposit, is 56 t Au, 15 t Pd, and 7 t Pt, grading 15.20 g/t Au, 4.09 g/t Pd, and 1.89 g/t Pt (CVRD, 1998). Original pre-mining resources have been estimated at ~110 t Au, ~35 t Pd, and ~18 t Pt, although the uncertainty of these figures is high.
