Powys is a principal area and ceremonial county in central Wales, within the United Kingdom, covering approximately 5,200 km², making it the largest county in Wales and one of the largest in Britain by area. It is bordered by Gwynedd to the north-west, Denbighshire and Wrexham to the north-east, Shropshire and Herefordshire in England to the east, Monmouthshire to the south-east, Carmarthenshire to the south-west, and Ceredigion to the west. The administrative centres are Llandrindod Wells, Brecon, and Welshpool, reflecting Powys’s formation from the historic counties of Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire, and Brecknockshire.
Geographically, Powys is predominantly upland and rural, characterised by rolling hills, broad moorlands, and deeply incised river valleys. It includes much of the Cambrian Mountains and a substantial part of the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog), with high ground exceeding 800 m in places. The county forms a major watershed for Wales, with rivers flowing eastward into England—including the Severn and Wye—and westward toward Cardigan Bay. Large areas are sparsely populated, with extensive farmland, forestry, and open moorland.
Geologically, Powys is one of the most important regions in Britain. Much of the county is underlain by Ordovician and Silurian sedimentary rocks, deposited in ancient marine basins and later deformed during the Caledonian orogeny. These rocks include mudstones, sandstones, turbidites, and volcanic units, particularly in the central and western uplands. In the south, the Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) dominates, forming the classic red-brown landscapes of the Brecon Beacons. Carboniferous limestones and sandstones occur locally, especially along the southern margins, and Quaternary glaciation has left widespread tills, moraines, and meltwater features.
Powys has a long and notable mineral and mining heritage, though generally on a modest scale. The county was historically important for lead and zinc mining, particularly in Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire, where veins containing galena, sphalerite, calcite, fluorite, and baryte were worked from Roman times through the 19th century. Smaller occurrences of copper and silver are known, and limestone has been quarried for building stone and agricultural lime. Although mining has ceased, many sites remain of interest for mineral collectors and industrial archaeology.
Historically, Powys takes its name from the early medieval Kingdom of Powys, one of the principal Welsh kingdoms before the Norman conquest. The region remained predominantly rural and Welsh-speaking for much of its history, with its upland geography shaping settlement patterns and economic activity. The modern county of Powys was created in 1974, consolidating historic counties into a single administrative area.
Powys’s combination of upland terrain, classic Lower Palaeozoic stratigraphy, and historic metal mining makes it a key region for understanding Welsh geology, Caledonian tectonics, and the relationship between geology, landscape, and long-term human activity in central Wales.
