The West Musgrave Block is found in the eastern Gibson Desert, near the junction of the South Australian, Northern Territory and Western Australian borders.
Very limited exploration took place till about 2007, due to a ban placed on mining by the local aboriginal land council. In recent years this has been relaxed, leading to greater exploration of this vast and remote area. So far a couple of world class base metal deposits have been uncovered, along with many prospects. Much hype has surrounded the area in recent years, but it should be noted its about as remote as it gets in Australia, and a very long way from the nearest port. Exploration though is in its infancy here, and more discoveries may await.
Three indigenous communities exist in the region-Jamieson, Blackstone and Wingellina, and alot of vast empty desert.
The two major deposits are Nebo-Babel (Ni-Cu-PGE), the largest of its kind discovered worldwide in recent years, but still sub-economic. The other is the huge Wingellina Ni laterite deposit near the South Australian border.
Other prospects are many and are regularly being added to. Some known are Tollu (Cu-Ni-Ag), Helena (Wi-Cu), Halleys (Cu-Ni-PGE), Alladin (Cu-Pb) and Titan (Cu-PGE) all generally south of Blackstone. Red Rock and Nebo-Babel (Cu-Ni-PGE) and Hand Pump (Au) south of Jamieson. Alystra (PGE), Alystra East (Ni-Cu), Moly Hill (Mo-As), Carmen (Cu), Carmen West (W-Cu), Dragonfly, El Cortez and Stripeys all north of Blackstone. Wingellina (Ni) near the Wingellina Community, Antlion, The Twins and Baggeley (Ni-Cu-PGE) south of Wingellina.
The West Musgrave Block is an east-west elongated belt, 50 kilometres wide and 500 kilometres long, bounded by a younger continental basin. The Block contains extensive exposures of layered mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Giles Complex, with about 20 major intrusions and many smaller bodies of layered cumulates, in the continental scale Warakurna Igneous Province.
This entry refers more to a geological province than a specific site. The Mindat co-ordinates denote no particular deposit, merely plonked in the middle of the desert and the geological province.
