Pest County (Pest vármegye) is an administrative county in central Hungary, forming a broad ring around the capital city Budapest, which is administratively separate from the county. Pest County covers approximately 6,400 km² and is bordered by several other Hungarian counties, including Komárom-Esztergom, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Bács-Kiskun, Fejér, and Nógrád. The county occupies a strategically important position at the heart of the country and includes extensive lowlands, river valleys, and upland areas. Major rivers include the Danube, which flows north–south through the region, as well as the Ipoly along the northern boundary and the Zagyva and Tápió rivers in the east.
Geographically and geologically, Pest County is highly varied. Much of the central and southern part lies within the Pannonian Basin, underlain by thick Cenozoic sedimentary deposits—sands, gravels, clays, silts, and loess—laid down in fluvial and lacustrine environments. These deposits form broad plains with fertile soils that support intensive agriculture. In contrast, the northern and eastern parts of the county include upland and mountainous terrain, notably the Pilis, Visegrád, and Cserhát mountains. These areas expose older Mesozoic limestones and dolomites, Palaeozoic basement rocks, and Neogene volcanic rocks, particularly in the Visegrád Mountains, which are part of the Inner Western Carpathians.
This geological diversity has supported a varied mineral and extractive heritage. Pest County has long been a source of construction materials, including sand, gravel, and clay from the Danube floodplain and terrace deposits, used for building, bricks, and ceramics. Quarrying of limestone and dolomite in the northern uplands has been important for cement, lime, and building stone, while andesite and other volcanic rocks from the Visegrád area have been widely used as aggregates and road stone. Metallic mining has been limited, but industrial minerals have played a key role in regional development.
Administratively, Pest County is divided into districts (járások), with numerous towns and rural communities surrounding Budapest. The county has a strong and diverse regional identity shaped by its role as the hinterland of the capital, its mix of lowland agricultural areas and upland landscapes, and its position at the geological and geographic crossroads of the Pannonian Basin and the Carpathian Mountains.
