Phosphate deposit (25 million metric tons), planned mining of weathered apatite-rich marble.
"Eppawala and its surroundings are located within a geological region of high-grade phosphate deposits – Sri Lanka's only phosphate deposits. Mined since the 1970s by government-owned Lanka Phosphate, the deposits attracted media attention and spawned national protests in the late 1990s when overseas corporations expressed interest in initiating intensive mining operations." (Wikipedia)
Open-pit mining of phosphate rock commenced in 1973 and in 1989, c. 200000t were being produced annually (Jayawardena 2005). Reserves are estimated at c. 60x10⁶ t. The ore is of high grade (36-37% P₂O₅) but has high Cl content, which precludes it being used for the production of phosphoric acid. Production of phosphate rock was c.55000t in 2010, all of which is used in the domestic market (Woolley 2019, p. 205).
The Eppawala carbonatites form a N–S trending belt of oval-shaped bodies that intruded into the granitic gneiss of the WC associated with migmatitic hornblende–biotite and charnockitic gneisses.
The PXRD pattern of the sample corresponding to lateritic soil. Some of these minerals may be questionable.
