The mountain is named after the Italian Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, who climbed it in 1906.

Mount Luigi di Savoia, like all mountains in the Ruwenzori Range, has multiple jagged peaks. The highest is Sella Peak (4627 m a.s.l.), made of a diabase dyke at the contact with gneiss and amphibolite rocks, on which numerous fulgurites are found.

A large pegmatite dyke, with microcline crystals up to 10x15 cm, rhombododecahedral garnet crystals and terminated prisms of black tourmaline, was observed below Stairs Peak (Roccati, 1907).
