In the Carajás domain, bauxite occurs within a complete lateritic profile developed over mafic rocks, specifically basaltic andesite of the Grão Pará Group, with a total thickness of ∼ 156 m and well-defined vertical zoning into saprolite, clayey horizon, bauxitic horizon, and ferruginous crust. The saprolite preserves parent rock relicts within a matrix of vermiculite and kaolinite, grading upward into a kaolinite-dominated clayey horizon, followed by a thick (∼22 m) highly porous bauxitic horizon dominated by gibbsite (≈57–77%) with significant Fe oxides (goethite and hematite), and capped by a ferruginous crust rich in Fe oxides with subordinate gibbsite.
