The Clarke Award

I have now read all the Clarke shortlist! (*)

The clear winner for me is _Station Eleven_, but I wouldn't be disappointed to see _Europe in Autumn_, _The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August_, or _The Girl With All The Gifts_ win. I recommend these four and _The Memory of Water_ as all worth reading. I will be looking out for more books from all these authors. I was unimpressed with _The Book of Strange New Things_.

(*) Brief review of The First Fifteen Lives Of Harry August by Claire North: I really enjoyed this book; it's a very interesting premise, well thought through, and excitingly written. I binge-read it with great enjoyment. The protagonist lives a kind of looped life, where after death he is reborn, at the same time and in the same circumstances as the last time, but with all his memories. The plot is a standard "bad person does something bad, they must be stopped!", which always strikes me as a bit of a boring way to tell a story in an interesting world. However the nature of the setup makes this more engaging than it often is, with the setup having lots of interesting ramifications for how to defeat the bad person. Reading - bumper edition

Recently read:

* T Kingfisher - Nine Goblins
Not my favourite of hers (I prefer the fairy stories), but jolly enough.

* TS Eliot - Prufrock and Other Observations
* TS Eliot - The Waste Land
* TS Eliot - Poems 1920
Because steph has been trying to persuade me to read Eliot for ages. I particularly liked the ones about street scenes, like _Preludes_ and _Rhapsody On A Windy Night_, which I found very evocative.

* Brian Vaughan & Fiona Staples - Saga vol 3
* Brian Vaughan & Fiona Staples - Saga vol 4
<3, will review properly elsewhere when I get round to it.

* Paul Cornell &c. - Saucer Country 1-6
* Scott Snyder &c. - Severed 1-7
* Nick Spencer &c. - Bedlam 1-6
Cast-offs from aardvark179. None of these particularly grabbed me.

* E Nesbit - Five Children and It
Easy reading for ill [personal profile] cebs.

Currently reading:
Year's Best SF18, ed. David Hartwell - love this series!

Coming soon:
An assortment of interesting stuff I got from Eastercon. Plus Digger, yay!
