Assorted things, disruptions edition
We're having our dining room lights fixed today, after an exciting arcing incident in the shonky wiring for the unsatisfactory halogen spot lights. The electrician's replacing them with dimmable LED spotlights (for intimate soirées) and a couple of LED panels (for bright, even, non-shadowy light suitable for doing crafts). This has involved moving everything out of my room so that the carpet and floodboards could come up. Most of my furniture is currently crammed into the spare room, and I spent the latter part of yesterday evening remembering things I needed that were buried inaccessibly at the far side of a large pile of furniture. (Now it all has to move back in time for next-weekend-but-one when relatives are coming to stay.)
The road round the corner from us has been having some kind of gasmergency, necessitating the precipitous digging up of a sizeable proportion of the pavement on one side of the road. I've seen them using a giant machine with a large tube attached which I think is some sort of soil hoover. There are many, extensive holes revealing much more of the under-pavement plumbing than you usually get to see. It's quite interesting!
