Worldcon

Would any of you like to help out with Worldcon organisation? We have a variety of volunteer positions open, including things that don't need a large time commitment, things that can be finished in advance of the convention[*], things that don't require any previous experience, and things you don't need to be in Finland to do. Full list at: http://www.worldcon.fi/recruitment/

(If I know anyone who wants to help and can make CAD maps, please let me know, I desperately need a map-maker for the Exhibit halls.)

[*] There will also be things that can be done entirely at the convention, but we'll mostly be recruiting for those nearer the time.

Worldcon site selection voting

MidAmeriCon aren't taking site selection ballots for the 2018 Worldcon electronically, only by post/in person. I intend to post mine, is there anyone else local who's voting and want to give me theirs and I'll post them all together?

Voting token payment (buys you membership of whichever bid wins) is here: https://midamericon2.org/worldcon-76-site-selection-checkout/
And the ballot form is here: http://midamericon2.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/ballot-2018-worldcon-v6.pdf

ETA: if interested, get your ballot paper to me by the end of Thurs 14th July. Let me know if you're interested and I'll poke you nearer the time if I haven't heard from you...

Hugos

Remember to nominate for the Hugos if you're eligible (see below)! You *don't* have to have read everything published last year, you only have to have read/watched/appreciated at least one thing that was first published/broadcast last year that you think might be worthy of a Hugo[*]. The wisdom of crowds will sort the rest out. If you liked it, nominate it :-)

The deadline is March 31st, but you can keep editing and saving your ballot so put your ideas into it now before you forget, you can always go back later and edit them...

You're eligible if you are/were a member of last year's Worldcon (Sasquan), this year's Worldcon (MidamericonII) or next year's Worldcon (Worldcon 75 aka Helsinki). http://midamericon2.org/the-hugo-awards/hugo-nominations/ has the email address to contact if you are eligible but haven't received a voting PIN (or have lost it).

[*] Or read one new author first published last year/the year before who you think might be worthy of a Campbell Award.

Hugos and Worldcon

If you want to vote in the Hugos, remember the deadline is the end of this month (Friday July 31, 11:59PM PDT, aka Saturday August 1, 7:59AM BST). As last year, you can fill out your ballot in several stages, and they'll take its state at the deadline as your vote, so no reason not to start filling it in now. Vote here: http://sasquan.org/hugo-awards/voting/

Site selection votes have a longer deadline but are more faff. The deadline for emailed votes is Monday August 10, 24:00 PDT (aka Tuesday August 11 08:00 BST if I've converted it right). Step-by-step instructions are here: http://ceb.dreamwidth.org/222659.html

How to vote for the 2017 Worldcon site

1) First, you need to be a member of this year's worldcon, Sasquan. Supporting membership is sufficient. If you aren't a member, join here: https://sasquan.swoc.us/sasquan/reg.php

2) Pay for a voting token: https://sasquan.swoc.us/sasquan/sitevote-pay.php
Use the 'Member ID Lookup' to find yourself on the Sasquan membership list. Make a note of your Sasquan membership number for later, then click 'Submit information'. Put in billing details; I put 'UK' for both the 'state/province' and 'country' fields. Also I copied my billing address to the shipping fields. When the payment's gone through (this was fast for me) you'll be given a voting token number (it's also sent by email, so you can carry on to step 3 later if you like).

[ 2a) Ian got a disturbing 'duplicate entry for key primary' error message - sounds like a database error to me, so if this happens to you then email them at token2017@sasquan.org, info@sasquan.org . They said it was fine, not to worry about it, but I'd still email them if it happens to you.]

3) Download the voting form: http://sasquan.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Site-Selection-Ballot-A41.pdf , and print it out.

4) Fill in the form, the important bits are:
a) name and address
b) signature
c) advance membership (voting) fee - tick 'I have paid on the Sasquan website' and write in your voting token number from step 2
d) Sasquan membership number - from step 2
e) your choice of site - either a single cross for one site if you have no other preference, or 1 for your favourite, 2 for second favourite, etc.
All bids have filed paperwork which you can read at http://sasquan.org/site-selection/ if you'd like more information with which to make your choice. (NB none of the bids will include guests of honour; we're choosing on the merits of (a) location and (b) capability of the bid committee, without being swayed by big names.)

5) Don't fold the form as it repeatedly instructs you to; instead, scan it to PDF, and email it to ballot2017siteselection@sasquan.org before 24:00 PDT on Monday 10th August 2015.

6) Finished! When the winning bid is announced (at Sasquan in August), the money you paid in step 2 will automatically turn into a membership of the winning convention.

Yes, you're right, this is a massive faff...

Book haul!

Prompt, I know, but I've just been cataloguing my book haul from Worldcon.[*]

books!

Not legible in that pile: the rather beautiful Instructions by Bob Leman, the exhibitions catalogue, the art show book, a Finnish Weird compilation from the Helsinki bid, and a booklet from the Petrie about Time. I believe my copy of Sibilant Fricative was the first book bought in the dealers room (Ian W sold it to me before we were officially open - in fact before he'd finished setting up his stall). The Just City was a present from Jo, Fever Medicine was a present from one of the exhibitors, and many of the rest were paid or part-paid for with hard-earned groats. Particularly pleased with the John Harris book, which I discovered existed at the end of a long day after several hours of pining after his beautiful paintings (and was considerably cheaper than the real thing!).

[*] The Shepards and My Real Children actually arrived just after Worldcon, but only because I couldn't buy them there, they're morally Worldcon purchases.

Worldcon reflections

Briefly, I am so proud and glad I did this. It was massively rewarding and my immediate co-volunteers were all amazing people. We achieved a massive, awesome thing; both the con as a whole, and my department specifically. We had so many positive comments about the Exhibits Hall and several people said it was the best they'd ever seen and that we'd set a new bar. I nearly cried the first time I came down the stairs from the programme rooms during the day and saw the view of the whole thing happily running (this was about Saturday ;-).

Also I am not broken! Very happy.

Also very happy that SF fandom is making concrete progress on access, inclusivity, non-misogyny, not being arses, etc. and that the discussion around all this is (a) happening (b) happening quickly (c) largely happening civilly (d) having effects.

Worldcon other things

Massive balloon hats from the Masquerade!

We made the front page of the Guardian on the Saturday, with some lovely sympathetic articles/editorials.
