Just as essential as your shisha: the charcoal

Every shisha enthusiast has experienced it at least once. Everything is ready for a relaxing session and, just before you get started, you realise you're missing one crucial component. No aluminium foil? You improvise with kitchen foil or reach for a Kaloud-style Heat Management Device (HMD). Can't find your poker or fork? A cocktail stick usually does the trick. Even when you're running low on flavour, we've all mixed the last bits from different packs to keep the session alive.

But when you run out of shisha charcoal, that's a completely different story. No charcoal means no session. It doesn't matter if you own the perfect shisha, have packed your bowl flawlessly or have your favourite flavour ready to go. Without charcoal, none of it matters. And we've all asked ourselves the same question at some point: "Where on earth am I going to find charcoal at this time of night?"

Can you use any type of charcoal in a shisha?

In many North African countries, it's still common to see natural hardwood charcoal used in traditional tea houses. Its irregular shape and handcrafted appearance are part of the region's shisha culture and continue to be used with traditional pipes. Elsewhere, however, the market has evolved towards much more efficient alternatives.

Today, natural coconut charcoal has become the industry standard. It delivers excellent heat output, burns evenly, produces very little ash and, most importantly, doesn't affect the flavour of your tobacco. It is available in several shapes and sizes, although the most popular option remains the 26 mm shisha charcoal cube, which is compatible with the vast majority of bowls and Heat Management Devices.

Could you use barbecue charcoal instead? Technically, yes... but it's a very bad idea. It's much harder to light, creates considerably more ash and unpleasant odours, and burns far less consistently, making it almost impossible to manage your heat properly. In other words, however desperate you are, forcing barbecue charcoal into a Provost or any other Heat Management Device simply isn't going to give you a good session.

That's exactly why charcoal made specifically for shisha exists. It's designed to provide stable, consistent heat without adding unwanted flavours, making heat management much easier throughout the session. Alongside the classic cube shape, you'll also find hexagonal charcoal, rectangular sticks and third-disc formats. How do you light shisha charcoal?

Years ago, it was the only practical option available, but nowadays it has largely been replaced by natural charcoal. Although quick-light charcoal ignites within seconds, it often leaves an unpleasant chemical taste during the first few minutes and simply can't match the heat output or longevity of coconut charcoal.

Fortunately, the shisha charcoal market continues to evolve. Some manufacturers now produce natural quick-light charcoal, designed for situations where carrying a charcoal burner simply isn't practical, such as travelling or outdoor sessions. There are also innovative products such as Max Flow charcoal, which features a hole through the centre of each cube to improve airflow, promote more efficient combustion and provide even more consistent heat throughout the session.

Which is the best charcoal for shisha?

This is probably one of the questions we're asked most often. The honest answer is that there isn't one perfect charcoal for everyone. The best option depends on how you prepare your shisha, the bowl you use, your preferred Heat Management Device and, ultimately, your personal smoking style.

Today, there are countless brands of shisha charcoal, each offering its own characteristics. Some produce less ash, others maintain their heat for longer, while others are appreciated for how quickly they light or how consistently they burn. Even when comparing charcoal cubes of exactly the same size, different manufacturers can deliver noticeably different performance.

The best way to find your favourite is simply to try different brands and formats until you discover the one that suits your setup. Over time, you'll probably become loyal to one or two brands, just as most enthusiasts eventually develop their preferred bowls, tobacco and Heat Management Devices. Trying new products is always worthwhile, but most experienced smokers eventually settle on the charcoal that gives them the most reliable results.
