Shisha vases: much more than the base of your setup

It may sound obvious, but without a shisha vase there is no session. The vase holds the water, provides stability and plays a part in both the appearance and performance of your shisha. Although many shisha vases may look similar at first glance, there are important differences in size, weight, shape and connection type.

If you're new to shisha, your shisha will probably already include a vase. However, many manufacturers also sell their stems separately, allowing you to build your own setup, replace a broken vase or simply give a shisha you already own a completely different look.

Today, you'll find everything from simple and affordable glass shisha vases to carved designs, Brazilian-style vases, shapes inspired by Russian shishas and striking Bohemian glass vases. Sometimes, changing nothing more than the vase is enough to make the whole setup look completely different.

What is the difference between shisha vases?

Design may be the first thing you notice, but it shouldn't be the only consideration. Before choosing a glass shisha vase, you should check the connection type, neck diameter, height, weight and capacity.

Push-fit and threaded shisha vases

Many universal shisha vases use a push-fit connection with a rubber seal. The stem fits into the neck of the vase and the seal creates an airtight connection. It's a simple and widely used system that makes changing the vase relatively easy, provided the dimensions are compatible.

Other shishas use a threaded vase. These feature a metal threaded fitting attached to the glass, which screws directly onto the shisha body. The connection is secure and convenient, but compatibility is much more specific: a vase being roughly the right size isn't enough, the threads need to match exactly.

And be careful with the word “universal”. Just because two vases use a rubber seal doesn't automatically mean they're interchangeable. The neck diameter and stem design still need to be compatible. For example, a Bohemian glass vase designed for certain stems won't necessarily work correctly with every push-fit shisha.

Vase weight matters too

A heavy shisha vase provides greater stability, which is particularly useful with taller setups. A smaller, lighter vase takes up less room and is easier to transport, but it is also less forgiving when somebody accidentally pulls the hose. Most shisha owners already know how that particular story ends.

Shape matters as well. Wide vases, such as traditional elephant-foot shisha vases, provide a larger footprint and tend to be very stable, while slimmer designs offer a different aesthetic and take up less space on the table.

Does the vase affect the draw?

It can have an effect, although the vase alone doesn't determine how open or restricted a shisha feels. The downstem diameter, diffuser, hose connections and water level have a much greater influence on the final draw.

A larger vase can hold more water and has a greater internal air volume, but that doesn't mean you should overfill it. The correct water level depends on the shisha's downstem. A larger internal volume also means the purge needs to move more air before all of the smoke inside the vase is cleared.

Cleaning and maintaining a glass shisha vase

Keeping your shisha vase clean prevents old flavours, molasses and residue from building up between sessions. Smaller vases are generally easier to handle, while tall models, narrow necks and unusual shapes may require a dedicated cleaning brush.

How do you choose the right shisha vase?

The first thing to check is compatibility with your shisha. Before falling in love with a particular design, check the neck diameter, connection type and height required for the downstem to sit correctly inside the vase.

Then comes the fun part: choosing the style. How much water should you put in a shisha vase?

Once you've chosen your vase, filling it correctly is important. As a general starting point, the end of the downstem or diffuser should sit approximately 1.5 to 2 cm below the water. You can then make small adjustments depending on the draw you prefer and the design of your shisha.

Too much water will make the draw more restricted and increase the chance of water reaching the hose when you inhale or purge too forcefully. Too little water may leave the end of the downstem insufficiently submerged, reducing the bubbling and filtration you expect from a shisha.

And please: milk still isn't a good idea

Experimenting can be part of the fun. You can add ice to keep the water cool or use decorative elements provided they don't interfere with the shisha's operation. But replacing the water with milk won't create more smoke or improve the draw. It will simply leave residue, smells and a vase that's far more entertaining to clean than you'd like. Some experiments really don't need repeating.
