
BIFROST [Space Inventor]
BIFROST is a Danish-Swedish microsatellite developed for Arctic surveillance missions equipped with optical and infrared multispectral sensors. BIFROST is the first satellite specifically launched to monitor Greenland and the Arctic.
The BIFROST satellite is part of a planned constellation of 20 microsatellites designed to provide continuous monitoring of Arctic maritime activity. This capability is critical for the surveillance and protection of territories in the North Atlantic and Arctic regions, with a particular focus on Greenland. The mission supports the growing strategic emphasis placed on the Arctic by the Danish and Swedish governments, aligning with the Danish Space Strategy for Research and Innovation 20252035. Key operational objectives include monitoring navigation in ice-covered waters, supporting search and rescue operations, and maintaining sovereignty and situational awareness in the Kingdom of Denmark's northern territories.
The satellite enhances the capacity for space-based surveillance, target identification, and real-time event reporting. It plays a role in the tactical operations of the Danish and Swedish armed forces and contributes to international data-sharing frameworks through AI-driven analysis and rapid communication technologies.
BIFROST was developed by the Danish satellite manufacturer Space Inventor, based in Aalborg. The project was carried out in cooperation with Terma, Gatehouse SatCom, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), and Swedens Unibap Space Solutions. Development was financially supported by the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), both operating under their respective Ministries of Defence.
The satellite incorporates modern technological advances in artificial intelligence, sensor systems, and onboard processing. It is one of the first operational platforms in the region to implement inter-satellite communications and autonomous decision-making capabilities in a microsatellite format.
BIFROST has a mass of approximately 50 kg. Its deployable solar arrays have a wingspan of five meters, enabling sufficient power generation for high-performance payload operations in polar orbit. The satellite carries optical imaging sensors and multispectral instruments capable of collecting data in the infrared range. This allows for detailed observation of sea ice, vessel activity, and environmental changes.
The payload includes AI-supported onboard data processing, enabling near real-time analysis and reduced dependency on ground station bandwidth. The satellites architecture supports inter-satellite communication links, allowing future constellation members to relay data amongst each other before downlinking to Earth. This feature enhances responsiveness and enables adaptive tasking in coordinated monitoring missions.
BIFROST was launched on 23 June 2025 aboard a SpaceX Falcon-9 v1.2 (Block 5) launch vehicle as part of the Transporter-14 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
