QUICK³ [TU Berlin]
QUICK³ (QUantum photonIsChe Komponenten für sichere Kommunikation mit Kleinsatelliten) is a German CubeSat and has a mass of approximately 4 kilograms. It carries a single-photon source designed specifically for nanosatel developed by a research consortium led by the Technical University of Munich. The purpose of the QUICK³ mission is to test key components for future quantum communication satellites. The mission focuses on technologies required for secure data transmission based on quantum mechanics rather than classical optical communication.
Quantum communication encodes information in individual photons with defined quantum states. Any interception attempt alters these states and can be detected, providing inherent security. Unlike classical optical signals, single photons cannot be copied or amplified, which limits terrestrial fiber-based transmission to a few hundred kilometers. A satellite-based approach mitigates this limitation by transmitting through the upper atmosphere, where light scattering and absorption are minimal, enabling long-distance quantum links.
A further mission objective is to demonstrate the interaction and survivability of quantum communication components under space conditions. These tests are a prerequisite for a future global quantum communication network that would require several hundred satellites.
An additional scientific objective is the experimental test of the Born probability interpretation of the quantum wave function in microgravity. This principle describes the probability of detecting a quantum particle at a given location. Its universal validity under space conditions has not previously been experimentally verified.
The satellite was developed by a consortium led by the Technical University of Munich, with major contributions from Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik, and Technical University Berlin. International partners include the Institute for Photonics and Nanotechnologies of the Italian National Research Council and the National University of Singapore. The project integrates compact quantum optics, single-photon sources, and space-qualified nanosatellite subsystems.
QUICK³ is based on the 3U CubeSat standard and has a mass of approximately 4 kilograms. It carries a single-photon source designed specifically for nanosatellite operation, replacing laser-based transmitters used in other quantum satellite missions. This approach allows higher potential data rates within the limited contact time between the satellite and ground stations.
The spacecraft platform supports precise optical alignment, thermal stabilization of quantum components, and onboard control electronics optimized for low power consumption. The mission is designed to operate in low Earth orbit, enabling repeated short-duration communication passes over ground stations.
QUICK³ was launched on 23 June 2025 aboard a booster rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The satellite was deployed into low Earth orbit as part of a rideshare mission. Initial commissioning followed launch, with first experimental results expected by the end of 2025.
