
Hyperion GR1 [Open Cosmos]
Hyperion GR-1 is the first satellite in the seven-spacecraft Hyperion GR Earth observation constellation, developed by Open Cosmos Aegean for the Greek National Microsatellite Programme. Built in Athens on a 100 kg-class platform, the satellite marks the beginning of Greece's domestic satellite manufacturing capability. It provides sub-meter panchromatic imagery, onboard artificial intelligence processing, and inter-satellite communications, while also serving as one of the first spacecraft in the OpenConstellation 1.0 network.
Hyperion GR-1 is equipped with a panchromatic imaging payload providing 90 cm ground resolution and a visible/near-infrared (VNIR) multispectral camera with 4 m resolution across blue, green, red, and near-infrared bands. The instrument has a swath width of 12.3 km and supports applications including disaster response, flood monitoring, agriculture, environmental protection, infrastructure monitoring, maritime surveillance, and security. Onboard AI performs image analysis, spectral feature extraction, and target detection to reduce data volumes before transmission to Earth.
The complete Hyperion GR constellation will consist of seven satellites carrying complementary Earth observation payloads. In addition to panchromatic and VNIR imaging, later spacecraft will introduce short-wave infrared (SWIR), hyperspectral, Automatic Identification System (AIS), and Internet of Things (IoT) payloads. The hyperspectral instruments will support applications such as crop and forest monitoring, mineral exploration, water quality assessment, and environmental compliance, while the AIS and IoT payloads will expand maritime monitoring and connected sensor services. Inter-satellite links within the constellation are designed to reduce data delivery times, enabling actionable information to be provided within approximately 30 minutes during emergency situations.
