Gwynedd is a principal area in north-west Wales, UK, extending from the Irish Sea coast inland across much of Snowdonia (Eryri) and onto the Llŷn Peninsula. The landscape ranges from rugged mountain terrain and high upland plateaux to deeply incised valleys and indented coastlines, with elevations rising from sea level to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), 1,085 m, the highest point in Wales. The climate is strongly maritime, with high rainfall in the uplands and numerous short, steep rivers draining westward to the sea.
Geologically, Gwynedd is dominated by Lower Palaeozoic rocks, mainly Cambrian, Ordovician, and Silurian sedimentary and volcanic sequences formed in marine and volcanic-arc environments. Thick successions of rhyolitic and andesitic lavas, ash-flow tuffs, and volcaniclastics are interbedded with slates and mudstones, all intensely folded and cleaved during the Caledonian orogeny. Subsequent Quaternary glaciation sculpted the present landscape, producing classic cirques, U-shaped valleys, arêtes, and rock-basin lakes that characterise Snowdonia and adjacent uplands.
Gwynedd has a long and important mineral and extractive history, dominated by slate quarrying, which reached global significance during the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in districts such as Bethesda, Llanberis, Blaenau Ffestiniog, and Nantlle. Slate was exported worldwide for roofing and construction. Smaller-scale mining for copper, lead, zinc, and locally gold occurred in several parts of the region, associated with hydrothermal veins cutting volcanic and sedimentary rocks.
Administratively, modern Gwynedd largely replaces the historic counties of Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, together with parts of Denbighshire, and locality usage on Mindat follows current administrative boundaries rather than historic county extents.
