or Tolkien Reading Day. Frodo has completed his task! Sauron is defeated. The best new year, methinks for i've done so much in past years to celebrate.
:D I was rereading Houses of Healing and in search of good post-Quest angsty fic (well reading one right now on SoA and it's hitting the spot but more fics would be great as well)
ALso happy birthday to Grey_wonderer! (3/24) <3
This is a birthday mathom for her (unedited so feel free to point out grammatical issues and the like.
‘Not very expensive as a rule’ – applied to all the gifts. Bilbo was in this as in other ways an exceptional person, and his Party was a riot of generosity even for a wealthy Hobbit. But one of the commonest birthday ceremonies was the giving of a ‘party’ – in the evening of the Day. All those invited were given presents by the host, and expected them, as part of the entertainment (if secondary to the fare provided). But they did not bring presents with them. Shire-folk would have thought that very improper. If the guests had not already given a gift (being one of those required to do so by kinship), it was too late. For other guests it was a thing ‘not done’ – it looked like paying for the party or matching the party-gift, and was most embarrassing. Letter 214, The Letters of JRR Tolkien
I love these hobbit customs that are so particular to their culture .:) … Lunar New Year is this weekend so there will be festivities on my end . Have a good one everyone !
And a quote from T0lkien about Frodo, my favorite character always
"But at this point the 'salvation' of the world and Frodo's own 'salvation' is achieved by his previous pity and forgiveness of injury. At any point any prudent person would have told Frodo that Gollum would certainly (not quite certainly - the clumsiness in fidelity of Sam was what finally pushed Gollum over the brink, when about to repent) betray him, and could rob him in the end. To 'pity' him, to forbear to kill him, was a piece of folly, or a mystical belief in the ultimate value-in-itself of pity and generosity even if disastrous in the world of time. He did rob him and injure him in the end - but by a 'grace', that last betrayal was at a precise juncture when the final evil deed was the most beneficial thing anyone could have done for Frodo! By a situation created by his 'forgiveness, he was saved himself, and relieved of his burden. He was very justly accorded the highest honours - since it is clear that he and Sam never concealed the precise course of events."
Letter 181, The Letters of JRR Tolkien
This letter is as good as 246 which said that Frodo did not fail, and this addresses the concept of pity and forgiveness and injury. Remember Frodo did tell Sam at the end that he and Gandalf knew that Gollum had a part to play in the end.
became a series of drabbles (i blame grey_wonderer) for giving me this idea. Happy Yuletide and mettare and any hobbity or Gondorian holiday you may celebrate! ;) Two within and probably two more will be posted soon...
Dedicated to grey_wonderer because she had the best paragraph in one of our impromptu chats about how multi-layered Samwise is (and other fanficcy matters) and yes, he is a very important hobbit. :)
And Frodo did know in the beginning about how multi-layered Sam is- "I am learning a lot about Sam Gamgee on this journey. First he was a conspirator, now he's a jester. He'll end up becoming a wizard- -or a warrior!" -Flight to the Ford
When we were young, we did not fear magic rings and everlasting wounds.
We were not left behind.
We did not see a mad man burn his son alive, a city under siege, a troll crushing you till you could not breathe.
We didn't worry about dwindling energy, a barren wasteland, a master so weak he could barely hold up his head.
The Quest had not happened but now that we have survived, we can live to tell our children of a darker time when hope seemed futile. Now we still live to see a new age, peace under a King.
I always found it doubtful that Bilbo didn't contact Frodo after he left the Shire so this is my gap-filler on that and probably a slight AU that there was contact. A little ficlet for shirebound's birthday on 3/28. Love you my dear mellon! :huggles:
But will there be hobbits? Backstory before Fellowship is fine but what of hobbits? Will we see Bilbo? Young Frodo?
I love Aragorn's story- i even really liked "Born of Hope"-the fan film from several years ago, but hobbits are in MIddle-earth and young Bilbo, Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam would be most appreciated as well.... We need some hobbit fans to come up and demand some scenes! :)
[EDIT] Maybe it'll be too young for Pippin and i'm reading that the focus is Aragorn and his backstory but there can be AU of Aragorn visiting the Shire? Most likely meet with Bilbo, not the younger hobbits. I have to see the timeline again to see when everyone is born. I know that Gandalf and Aragorn met 2954 and Frodo is born 2968.. lots of discussion is about Aragorn and his journeys and yes, there is a lot to film. I wonder if they can sneak in guarding of the Shire? Dialogue between Gandalf and Aragorn about the Shire-folk? :hopeful:
I couldn't stop staring at beautiful, angsty, falling Frodo. <3 He really fell too much in this movie but you must blame gravity? His eyes though... gosh *fangirling continues *
That really was the purpose of FOtR EE last night. I took some pictures too. (Am I nuts? yes, you can call me that, precioussss :P :P :P)
My favorite scenes with the EE in theaters are obviously "Concerning Hobbits", Sam and Frodo seeing the Woodelves, Gift giving at Lothlorien, and not extended which gets me alllll the time is when the Fellowship is grieving Gandalf and the Breaking of the Fellowship. <3
Plot bunny that MUST BE WRITTEN:
Frodo explaining to Merry and Pippin what he was doing going to Bree-- did anyone write this already? I am sure it should've been- such a big gap to fill!
I'm so tired today. I am not as young as I thought to only get 6 hours of sleep and working whole day. :P
Ok, i'm good still in such a lovey-dovey, fangirly mood now. :D :) :P
Quote of the moment (found it while reading my own old fic);)
It is a long way, is it not, from Bree, where you did not like the look of me? A long way for us all, but yours has been the darkest road." ~Aragorn, The Field of Cormallen <3 <3

So grey_wonderer and I did a joint venture this time! It is very exciting and i think we just texted each other and then emailed what we had. So this is a ficlet about Sam post Rosie's death.
Rated: G-PG Summary: What pushed Sam over the edge to make the decision to leave Middle-earth? A/N- all grammar errors are our own. :) by GW and periantari
Title: Untitled Author: periantari Characters: the hobbits, Aragorn Rating: G Warnings: n/a Book/Source: LotR Disclaimer: Tolkien's characters, but i love them so much and wish they were mine! =) Note: This became different than i intended so i don't know if it fits the challenge from tolkien_weekly though... this what i thought of when they mentioned "moon" though. “The old moon passed, and a new moon waxed and waned in the world outside, while we tarried there.” –Aragorn, The Great River ( Read more...Collapse )
"His will was set and only death could break it." ~RotK
"War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but i do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only which they defend." - Faramir
"Here I am at the best end of the day again. The most marvellous sunset I have seen for years: a remote pale green-blue sea just above the horizon, and above it a towering shore of bank upon bank of flaming cherubim of gold and fire, crossed here and there by misty blurs like purple rain. It may portend some celestial merriment in the morn, as the glass is rising." ~JRR Tolkien
"You must choose, Beren, between these two: to relinquish the quest and your oath and seek a life of wandering upon the face of the earth; or to hold to your word and challenge the power of darkness upon its throne. But on either road I shall go with you, and our doom shall be alike. " ~Luthien, The Silmarillion
“The die is cast. Now comes the test, in which my boast shall be made good or fail utterly. I will flee no more. Turambar indeed I will be, and by my own will and prowess I will surmount my doom—or fall. But falling or riding, Glaurung at least I will slay.” ~Turin, The Children of Hurin
