Mt Riddock Station
Mountt Riddock station is a pastoral station covering an area of around 2635 square kilometres.
The Mount Riddock Station covers several historic mica mines, some containing gemstones, arguably the best kornerupine specimens ever seen, a large modern garnet sands mine, the popular garnet fossicking site linked to Gemtree, and the unique Rainbow Lattice Sunstones from Kong.
Locations are generally south of the Plenty Highway to the southern border of the station, within the far larger Harts Range. The western limit is 30 kilometres west of the Mount Riddock homestead, and in the opposite direction, some 15 kilometres east of Atitjere.
The original reference (Warren & McColl, 1983) states the best kornerupine crystals were found in the West Harts Range, on a low hill bordered by a plain. It nominates a second location as 6 kilometres west south-west of Mount Baldwin, outside the Harts Range. The description of the specimens between the two locations, would indicate most (probably all) specimens seen are from the Harts Range location. Sapphirine is often associated with the kornerupine crystals. White Dam, sometimes mentioned as the location for these specimens, could not be located. (There is a White Hill Dam south of Mt. Riddoch?)
"The kornerupine-bearing outcrops at the western Harts Range locality are confined to a single layer in a well-layered sequence of quartzofeldspathic gneiss in the Strangways Metamorphic Complex. Where the sapphirine and kornerupine occur, the layer is about 10 m thick. It can be traced in one direction for about 50 m before it lenses out abruptly"(Warren & McColl, 1983.
