Somaliland
Somaliland is a region in the northwest of Somalia, occupying the territory of the former British Somaliland Protectorate along the Gulf of Aden. In 1991, following the collapse of the central Somali state, Somaliland declared independence from Somalia and has since operated as a self-governing political entity. It is not internationally recognised as a sovereign state and is generally considered part of Somalia in international usage.
Geographically, Somaliland comprises coastal plains along the Gulf of Aden, rising southwards to uplands and plateaus that form part of the Horn of Africa. The region includes escarpments and highlands that separate the coastal zone from the interior.
Geologically, Somaliland is underlain predominantly by Precambrian crystalline basement rocks of the ArabianâNubian Shield, overlain in places by sedimentary sequences of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age. These include sandstones, limestones, and marine sediments deposited along the southern margin of the Tethys Ocean. Structurally, the region has been influenced by rifting associated with the opening of the Gulf of Aden, which has affected sedimentation patterns and fault development.
Mineral occurrences in Somaliland are associated with both basement-hosted and sedimentary environments and include industrial minerals and metallic mineralisation reported from various parts of the region. Locality records attributed to Somaliland may appear in the literature under British Somaliland, Somalia, or Somaliland, reflecting changes in political administration and usage over time.

Brock et al. (1964) provide a wet chemical analysis with SiO2-37.13, TiO2-0,3, Al2O3-12.5, MnO-0.6, FeO-21.55, Fe2O3-11.14, MgO-0.83, CaO-7.54, Na2O-3.84, K2O-2.81, H2O-1.85. When normalized, this analysis give too high C3+ and too high A values. This may indicate analytical errors. |
