Somalia
Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is a country in the Horn of Africa. In mineralogical and historical literature it may also appear under earlier administrative frameworks dating from the colonial and early post-independence periods. The country is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and Kenya to the southwest, and includes the longest mainland coastline in Africa.
Geographically, Somalia consists largely of plateaus, plains, and uplands, with the most rugged terrain occurring in the northern part of the country. This northern region corresponds broadly to the former British Somaliland Protectorate. Since 1991, this area has operated as a self-declared political entity known as Somaliland, which is generally regarded internationally as an autonomous region within Somalia. Historical specimen labels and literature may therefore refer to localities in this area under British Somaliland, Somalia, or Somaliland, depending on the period.
Geologically, Somalia lies along the eastern margin of the African continent and includes Precambrian basement rocks overlain by sedimentary sequences of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age. The northern regions expose older crystalline rocks and sedimentary units associated with the Arabian–Nubian Shield and related tectonic provinces, while younger sedimentary basins dominate much of the central and southern parts of the country. This geological framework has influenced the distribution of known mineral occurrences.
Most documented mineral localities in Somalia are concentrated in the northern regions, particularly within Somaliland, where basement rocks and associated structures host a variety of reported mineral occurrences. Mineralogical records from southern Somalia are comparatively sparse and are often associated with sedimentary environments.
Administratively, Somalia was reorganised in approximately 1982, when the country was restructured from eight provinces into sixteen regions. Older literature and specimen records may therefore reference administrative divisions that no longer correspond directly to modern regional boundaries.
