Ceredigion is a county and unitary authority in west Wales, UK, extending along the Cardigan Bay coast and inland across rolling uplands and deeply incised river valleys. The landscape is dominated by moorland plateaux, steep-sided valleys, and a rugged coastline with cliffs and shingle beaches. Elevations rise inland toward the Cambrian Mountains, with a cool, wet maritime climate and numerous short rivers draining westward to the sea, including the Rheidol, Ystwyth, and Teifi.
Geologically, Ceredigion is underlain almost entirely by Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, mainly Ordovician and Silurian mudstones, siltstones, and sandstones, deposited in deep-marine basin environments. These rocks were strongly folded and faulted during the Caledonian orogeny, producing the characteristic linear ridges and valleys of the region. Mineralisation occurs mainly in hydrothermal vein systems, typically hosted by fractures within these sedimentary sequences, with limited igneous influence compared to north-west Wales.
Ceredigion has a well-documented mineral and mining history, particularly for lead, zinc, and silver, with associated minerals such as galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyromorphite, cerussite, and smithsonite. Mining was most active from the 18th to mid-19th centuries, notably in the Ystwyth and Rheidol valleys, including classic localities near Devil’s Bridge (Pontarfynach). Administratively, modern Ceredigion largely corresponds to the historic county of Cardiganshire; it formed part of Dyfed between 1974 and 1996 before re-establishing its historic identity, and Mindat localities follow the current county boundaries rather than former administrative units.
