Cooper & Stanley (1991):
"The Caldbeck Fells mining district is a loosely defined area covering some 25 square km to the south of the village of Caldbeck in the northeastern corner of the English Lake District, about 12 km north-northeast of Keswick. Before the county boundary changes of 1974, the Caldbeck Fells were part of the ancient county of Cumberland now absorbed in the new county of Cumbria.
For the most part, the Caldbeck Fells (the word "fell" generally refers to an upland pasture, moor or high plateau) consist of rolling, treeless moorland dissected by numerous watercourses running in steep-sided valleys known locally by the old Norse name of "gills". It was in these gills that the majority of mineral veins worked by the early miners were discovered.
The area is part of the Lake District National Park, and vehicular access is restricted; however, many of the mines may be reached without too strenuous a walk, the main hazard is the weather which is apt to be wet and dismal. Away from the mine dumps the Caldbeck Fells have a subtle beauty rarely seen by the countless casual visitors and tourists who flock to the central Lake District. It is surprising that despite hundreds of years of commercial exploitation and study by generations of mineralogists and collectors, the mineral localities continue to produce new discoveries of common and exotic mineral species."

Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "The 'brewsterite' recorded by Hall (1868) as an associate of tenorite and chalcopyrite is unlikely to be the zeolitic brewsterite (of Brooke) as assumed by Young (1987). It is more likely to be the 'brewsterite' listed by Branston (1910) and Postlethwaite (1913) as 'protoxide of copper'. Although the latter is a synonym of cuprite, the name brewsterite in this context does not appear in any standard mineralogy or synonymy known to the authors and the precise definition of the term appears to be lost." | ⓘ Duftite var. Calcio-duftite Formula: (Pb,Ca)CuAsO4(OH) Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): Kingsbury & Hartley claimed that material they had collected resembled, but was not identical with duftite was actually an intermediate between duftite and conichalcite. They coined the term 'calcio-duftite' for this mineral on the basis of the intermediate nature of the x-ray powder spacings and a qualitative (spectrographic) analysis that showed significant calcium. Claringbull also mentioned the affinity of the x-ray pattern of Brandy Gill duftite with conichalcite and commented on the variation of refractive index within individual spherules of the mineral which, he suggested, resulted from a corresponding variation in composition with the core being richer in lead than the outer areas. |
| ⓘ Duftite var. Duftite-β Formula: PbCu(AsO4)(OH) Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "Most duftite from Brandy Gill appears to be β-duftite as defined by Guillemin (1956: 70), who re-examined Claringbull's (1951) x-ray data. Infra-red absorption spectrophotometry readily distinguishes α- and β-duftite and also shows the predominance of the latter at this locality (R.S.W. Braithwaite, pers. comm.)." |
| ⓘ 'Duftite-alpha' Formula: PbCu(AsO4)(OH) Habit: globular masses Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "a few specimens recently examined appear to be α-duftite which, at Brandy Gill, forms small globular masses on quartz (M.P. Cooper Collection, det. P.J. Dunn, Smithsonian Institution: XRD) or minute crystals with agardite-mixite (det. BM(NH): XRD, C.M. Leppington, pers. comm.)" |

| ⓘ 'Grünlingite' ? Localities: Description: Kingsbury reference. Kingsbury (1965): "For many years the bismuth telluride tetradymite (Bi2T2S) has been accepted as a British species, but this status has never been satisfactorily established. It was originally thought to occur in Brandy Gill, Carrock Fell, Cumberland, though in 1858 Greg and Lettsom had stated that the mineral appeared to differ much in composition from other tetradymites. The Carrock mineral was later regarded as a new species and was named grünlingite, but further investigations have shown that these specimens are not all identical and probably represent several varieties or phases of the allied mineral joséite, with compositions near Bi4TeS2: none of them, so far, have proved to be tetradymite." |

The mineral was found in specimens from the dumps of the eastern level as small (< 1.5mm), dark olive-green bladed crystals on a yellowish-green crystalline mineral (which 'gives [an x-ray powder] pattern and spacings very close to those of the well-known pale blue Cumberland plumbogummite' op. cit.: 724.) It was found in cavities in granophyre presumed to be from the vein wall. Only a few specimens were obtained (Kingsbury and Russell Collections, BM(NH)) and, despite the exertions of a generation of collectors, none has been found since." |

| ⓘ Wooldridgeite Formula: Na2CaCu2+2(P2O7)2 · 10H2O Habit: tapering blades/prisms Colour: aquamarine blue Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "Sprays of tapering bladed aquamarine blue transparent crystals to 1.5mm on chrysocolla in quartz have been shown by XRD (BM(NH) & Leeds Univ.) and semi-quantitative EPMA (M. Rothwell, pers. comm.) to be a probable new species. Only two very small specimens have been found (J. Dickinson & P. Braithwaite Collections). The XRD pattern is closely related to that of the magnesium phosphate bobierrite (D.I. Green, pers. comm.)."
Bridges et al. (2011): "A copper calcium sodium pyro-phosphate hydrate occurring as ‘sprays of tapering bladed aquamarine crystals’ was described as an unknown species from the dumps of Roughton Gill Mine by Cooper and Stanley (1990, pp. 132-133). [...] Wooldridgeite was identified on a few small specimens collected by the late Peter Braithwaite and the late John Dickinson on the 90-fathom level dumps at Roughton Gill Mine. It occurs as pale ice-blue tapering prismatic crystals, which exceptionally reach 1.8 mm in length, but are usually much smaller than this. The crystals are commonly associated with ‘chrysocolla’ in porous quartz. They are very late in the paragenetic sequence. A few overgrow recent fractures in the quartz matrix which indicate a post-mining origin. It has not been found in this study." References: |

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Phanerozoic : 282 Ma to 178 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
