Modum is a municipality in Buskerud County, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Vikersund. The municipality of Modum was established on 1 January 1838.
The Modum municipality is known for the cobalt mines of the Blaafarveværket, now a large museum complex with guided tours through the Skuterud cobalt mines.
Among mineral collectors, this area is known for numerous occurrences of beautiful green serpentine and magnesite. The magnesite was actively mined by, e.g., Norsk Magnesit Industri, a company producing fireproof tiles from the magnesite. This is a rather neglected part of the geological history in Modum. The quality of the tiles was very good, and they were exported to many important smelters abroad.
The Glomsrudkollen zinc mine is popular among collectors. Nice epidote, fluorite and other minerals have been found here.
During WW2 muscovite was mined in several pegmatites.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Mesoproterozoic : 1463 Ma to 1080 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
