Writer's Block: Mark my words

What gives your life special meaning and purpose? Do you think it's important to leave a lasting mark on the world? If so, what form do you think this will take?

I'm not the type of person who is gullible enough to believe that I can make a lasting mark on the world. I am one person out of millions. If I can be remembered for my good traits and enjoy the time I have here with my friend and family, that's all I really need. I don't really care if the world remembers me or not because I won't be there to enjoy it if they do.

As for my life's meaning...I haven't really discovered that yet. My purpose in living is to be there as a friend to my friends and family and to enjoy the life that God has given me, as well as take that time to try and help people and seek out the lost. And that's pretty much it.

I'm getting really sick of the "JRPGs are not RPGs" banter that's been going around the nets lately. First it was some random dude, and now it's Bioshock. Bioshock does make some very popular games, I will admit, but none of them have ever interested me or sought to target my demographic. Thus, I've never really paid much attention to their thoughts or opinions. But when they go out and bash my RPGs....

Well, I can see his point. An RPG is not what it used to be. RPG means to "role-play", or to take an active role in a character. Most of the time you make a character and give it sets and traits. Kind of like how World of Warcraft works. You pick a class, create your character, and throw yourself into the world. But JRPGs are a little different. They follow a set storyline where the characters have already been established. And, all to be honest, I quite prefer that. If I want to make my own character, I'll go write a book and give myself complete freedom instead of only partial freedom that "RPGs" give you. Sure, you can choose your character, but not many of these games let you choose the story to its fullest extent. Even if you are given choices that affect the story, those are pre-set choices and you can only have so much impact on the story. You cannot make it yours; everyone else will follow a similar story.

In Japanese RPGs you usually don't get that many choices that affect the story, and you are usually given a pre-existing character which you can't customize very much unless it's a costume change or a weapon change. Playing JRPGs is more like reading a book, only you're interacting more directly with it by the fact that you're moving your character around and actually having to fight. The story and characters are the same for anyone who plays, though people might  see the character from a different angle.

As someone who's into psychology, I'm much more interested in the latter sort of RPG, so it kinda bugs me when people get down on RPGs. Gamers don't seem to realize that it's different strokes for different folks. Different people like different things. It doesn't make one kind of game better than another. Gamers need to get off their high horses and realize. Gamers seek to be accepted as part of society, but how can they when they're so narrow minded, even about their own hobby?

So in response to Bioshock, I will continue to call Japanese RPGs RPGs until you,or someone else, can give me a better title. Suck it up and get back to doing your job, making games.

That is all.
