Greg Martin has announced the release of Mainstream OS 3.0.0, a milestone version of the project's Arch-derived desktop and gaming Linux distribution with a highly customised Hyprland-based desktop. The new release comes with a long list of improvements: "A rebuilt Welcome app, smoother gaming with a new Gaming settings page, a hug-style dock and per-monitor wallpapers, with updates and shutdowns that keep your work and your changes safe. The Welcome app has been rebuilt - pick your language, window layout, hot corner and wallpaper, then style the bar, dock and window decorations while a live preview of your desktop updates as you go. Welcome's apps page now fits on one screen, sorted into Play, Create and Work, with anything you already have installed marked. Games run even better out of the box - GameMode (a performance booster) and MangoHud (an on-screen performance display) come installed, and the desktop stays responsive while a game loads from a hard drive. New Gaming page in settings - one switch keeps games smooth while something heavy runs in the background, and two more can help some games stutter less or load faster." See the detailed changelog for a complete list of changes. The OpenMandriva Lx project has released new live and installation media for its rolling-release "ROME" edition. Labelled as version 26.09, the new snapshot comes with a large number of package upgrades: "The glibc library has been enhanced with support for interchangeable malloc implementations. Choosing the appropriate implementation can provide performance improvements of up to 20%. The current release contains only the necessary infrastructure; future releases will include configurations that select optimal malloc implementations for selected key applications. We have updated our default compiler to LLVM/Clang 23, with the current version providing, among other things, improved code generation. We have also fixed a bug causing a clash between compiler-rt and libgcc_s, which could result in unexpected crashes in some applications. GCC has been updated to 16.2.0. At the same time, we fixed an issue that caused some AppImage applications to crash when launched. Our default package manager has been updated to RPM 6.1.0." Warith Al Maawali has announced the release of Kodachi OS 10.0.3, an updated version of the project's Debian-based Linux distribution with integrated privacy and security features on top of a highly customised Xfce desktop: "The first stable release of Kodachi 10. It contains everything in the Kodachi 10 beta record below, plus the changes listed here, which were made during the beta testing that followed that record. The stable downloads and the stable APT channel now carry Kodachi 10.0.3, and the Desktop, Terminal and Binary Pack editions all report the same version. Dispatch excerpt: switching the microphone off now stays off - the sound system could switch the capture back on about a second after a disable that had reported success, and the microphone guard now holds every sound card's capture switch off until you enable the microphone again; a VPN connection that stopped unexpectedly (a crash, a reboot or an upgrade while connected) no longer blocks every later connection with 'route restoration remains unverified'; the online status and public IP check answers in about 2 to 5 seconds instead of up to 25, so the desktop panel no longer shows the online status as empty." Here is a brief excerpt from the raw changelog. Download links (pkglist, username "kodachi", password "Security4All"): kodachi-os-xfce-10.0.3-amd64.iso (4,343MB, SHA512, signature), kodachi-os-terminal-10.0.3-amd64.iso (3,059MB, SHA512, signature). |

The Emmabuntüs project has published a new update with a focus on improving accessibility options and features. "Our goal was to preserve the spirit of this approach: making accessibility features immediately available without requiring users to memorize numerous keyboard shortcuts. Easy Menu: one key for simple access to accessibility features: The Easy Menu provides quick access to Emmabuntüs' main accessibility features through a dedicated key: Right Control or F12. A simple press of this key opens a menu containing the main available functions. Users can therefore access the tools they need more easily, without having to remember a multitude of key combinations. This approach is particularly useful for people using the Orca screen reader, but it can also make computers easier to use for anyone who needs simplified access to assistive features. From the main menu, Easy Menu also provides direct access to certain frequently used functions through dedicated keys." The openSUSE project has published a new release candidate for the upcoming Leap 16.1 release. Among the various changes is a new immutable mode for Leap: "Leap 16.1 is the first Leap release to offer an Immutable Mode, a transactionally updated system with a read-only root filesystem. This is essentially what our users know from Leap Micro, just integrated directly into Leap. Leap 16.1 in Immutable mode is replacing Leap Micro. There won’t be a Leap Micro 6.3 or 7.0; Leap Immutable is the way forward for container and virtual machine hosts, edge devices and anyone who prefers atomic updates with easy rollback. The Immutable mode was added to Agama rather recently, which is exactly why we’d like you to try it. Simply boot the usual Leap 16.1 install image and pick the Immutable mode in the installer.... Once installed, the system is updated with transactional-update, which creates a new snapshot for every update and lets you roll back if something goes wrong. Additional software is best consumed via containers with podman or distrobox, or via Flatpak on desktops." Additional details may be found in the release announcement. The Univention project has published an update for Univention Corporate Server which introduces new security options, selecting password hashes, performing Keycloak monitoring and simplifies managing Microsoft 365 Classroom tools. "The latest patch-level release of Univention Corporate Server bundles all new features and improvements from the past months onto new installation media including a new authorization backend for Nubus Guardian, more control over password hash security, deeper Keycloak observability, and simplified Microsoft 365 classroom management for schools - alongside continued groundwork for the upcoming UCS 5.3. New with UCS 5.2-7 comes a major performance improvement for WLAN authentication at scale. WLAN authentication with username and password against the Nubus RADIUS service relies internally on an authentication helper plugin. In very large environments with a high volume of authentication requests, this helper had become a measurable source of CPU load, limiting how many authentications an installation could realistically process." A complete list of changes and new features may be found in the company's release announcement, available in English and German. Additional details can be found in the release notes, which are also available in English and German. Download: UCS_5.2-7-amd64.iso (1,606MB, SHA512, signature, pkglist). |
