The openSUSE project has published a new release candidate for the upcoming Leap 16.1 release. Among the various changes is a new immutable mode for Leap: "Leap 16.1 is the first Leap release to offer an Immutable Mode, a transactionally updated system with a read-only root filesystem. This is essentially what our users know from Leap Micro, just integrated directly into Leap. Leap 16.1 in Immutable mode is replacing Leap Micro. There wonât be a Leap Micro 6.3 or 7.0; Leap Immutable is the way forward for container and virtual machine hosts, edge devices and anyone who prefers atomic updates with easy rollback. The Immutable mode was added to Agama rather recently, which is exactly why weâd like you to try it. Simply boot the usual Leap 16.1 install image and pick the Immutable mode in the installer.... Once installed, the system is updated with transactional-update, which creates a new snapshot for every update and lets you roll back if something goes wrong. The NetBSD project has announced the release of NetBSD 10.2, which introduces several fixes and small improvements to the highly portable operating system. "Changes since NetBSD 10.1 - Userspace: calendars: updated dates of moving holidays for 2026. build.sh: fixed various compilation issues with newer GCC versions. build.sh: add a new operation show-revisionid that extracts a marker usable to recreate the source (depending on the revision control system in use). build.sh: make reproducable builds work when -P is passed on the build.sh command line and MKREPRO_TIMESTAMP is set manually via -V. ftp(1): add connect command as a synonym for open. ftp(1): simplify buffer handling to improve performance. rmdir(1): add -v option. telnet(1): fixed various security issues. fsck_ffs(8): allow checking file systems with more than 2^32 blocks. httpd(8): serve .iso files as "application/octet-stream", fix some memory leaks, enhance documentation. makefs(8): honour the -m option to set the maximum disc size for cd9660. showmount(8): always print a space after the exported directory. syslogd(8): fixed various reliability issues." The Univention project has published an update for Univention Corporate Server which introduces new security options, selecting password hashes, performing Keycloak monitoring and simplifies managing Microsoft 365 Classroom tools. "The latest patch-level release of Univention Corporate Server bundles all new features and improvements from the past months onto new installation media including a new authorization backend for Nubus Guardian, more control over password hash security, deeper Keycloak observability, and simplified Microsoft 365 classroom management for schools - alongside continued groundwork for the upcoming UCS 5.3. New with UCS 5.2-7 comes a major performance improvement for WLAN authentication at scale. WLAN authentication with username and password against the Nubus RADIUS service relies internally on an authentication helper plugin. In very large environments with a high volume of authentication requests, this helper had become a measurable source of CPU load, limiting how many authentications an installation could realistically process." The Parted Magic project has published a new release. The new version, 26.09, has moved its base from Slackware 15.0 to Slackware's development (Current) branch. The release announcement, available on the distribution's news page states: "There is a new disk cloner in this release. Wipe Free Space has been rewritten and no longer depends on an outside tool. Every other program I write has been read line by line and then run against real drives on a bench machine kept for that purpose, and the bugs that came out of it are fixed. Underneath all of that the base system has been rebuilt on Slackware 'Current', the desktop moved from Xfce 4.16 to Xfce 4.20, and the wallpaper changed for the first time in over ten years. The release is named differently too, and it is signed. Both are explained at the end. Parted Magic Clone is new. It copies a disk, a partition, or an image of either, and it produces evidence that the copy is right. The rule it is built around is that the source is never written. Not one byte, no matter what. The source is opened read-only, and every corrective action, whether that is filling in a later slice, repairing a filesystem, growing it to fill a larger disk or repointing a boot loader, happens to the copy, after the copy has been read back and verified." The AlmaLinux project has published a new beta snapshot for the 9.x series. "AlmaLinux 9.9 beta introduces new compiler toolsets, new module streams, and improved security. This release adds GCC Toolset 16 alongside updated LLVM and Rust toolsets and brings Node.js 26 and PHP 8.4 as new module streams. Virtualization support is updated with the latest versions of libvirt and QEMU-KVM, and the graphics stack is refreshed with Mesa. Security is improved with updates to SSSD, SELinux policies, crypto-policies, Keylime, and Clevis, keeping your system safe and reliable. The latest version brings an updated look for the Raspberry Pi Desktop and also introduces a new icon dock: "Today brings you some optional updates to the Raspberry Pi Desktop, which gains some modern features while keeping its simplicity. What is currently known as the Raspberry Pi Desktop has been around for over a decade now - it started out as a mildly customised version of the stock LXDE desktop, and over the years has slowly evolved into something with almost entirely different underpinnings, based on Wayland and labwc. The look has been refreshed on several occasions, with new icons, themes and desktop backgrounds, to the point where there is very little visually in common between todayâs Raspberry Pi Desktop and the original LXDE. But one thing which has never changed is the overall feel of the desktop, which, with its taskbar, status icons and main menu launcher, is very reminiscent of the state of the art in desktop design from 30 years or so ago, with Windows 95 and Apple System 7." The Fedora project has announced the release of a development snapshot, Fedora 45 beta. The new release introduces new security features and package upgrades: "Fedora Linux 45 replaces the legacy in-kernel console with kmscon, bringing smooth rendering, better Unicode/font support, and enhanced system stability. Fedora Linux 45 now requires valid package signatures by default before installation, preventing unsigned packages from being installed unintentionally. Desktop secret management has also been standardized across environments with oo7, replacing legacy backend implementations like GNOME Keyring and KWallet. Fedora Linux 45 Beta has a lot of new versions available, including Podman 6, Pandas 3, MySQL and MariaDB, to name but a few, and boasts early access to updated toolchains and runtimes, including Python 3.15, Go 1.27, GCC 16.2 and glibc 2.44. Atomic Desktop ISO builds also now use image-builder and Fedora Linux 45 beta adds systemd-oomd and zram swap support to Fedora CoreOS.
