The developers of Talos Linux, a minimalist distribution designed specifically for running Kubernetes (an engine for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerised applications), have announced the release of Talos Linux 1.13.0: "Welcome to the 1.13.0 release of Talos. Important changes: Talos Linux now provides a way to run and attach to the privileged debug container with a user-provided container image, the debug container might be used for troubleshooting and debugging purposes; Talos now supports machine-wide container image signature verification via the new ImageVerificationConfig machine config document - any image which gets pulled on the node will be verified against the configured rules, and if no rule matches, it will be pulled without verification; Talos switched to using CDI and now supports configuring NVIDIA GPU via the gpu-operator helm chart; Talos Linux now supports optionally deploying Flannel CNI with network policy support enabled, the network policy implementation is kube-network-policies; Talos now uses inventory-backed server-side apply when applying bootstrap manifests (including extraManifests and inlineManifests)...." | Talos is a specialist Linux-based operating system for running Kubernetes, an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerised applications. Minimal, immutable and hardened, it does not offer any shell or interactive console; instead, all system management is done via remote Application Programming Interface (API) calls, where messages sent from a client application are protected with mutual Transport Layer Security TLS (mTLS) authentication. Talos also delivers atomic updates, thus maintaining the Linux and Kubernetes versions up-to-date. Talos is developed in the USA by Sidero Labs, Inc.

Talos Linux, an independently-developed Linux distribution designed specifically for running Kubernetes (an engine for automating deployment, scaling and management of containerised applications), has been updated to version 1.14.0. The news release enables support for DNS over TLS and HTTPS, and adds Btrfs as a new filesystem option: "Welcome to the 1.14.0 release of Talos. Talos now supports DNS over TLS (DoT) and DNS over HTTPS (DoH) for secure DNS resolution. These features allow Talos to encrypt DNS queries and responses, enhancing privacy and security for DNS traffic. The DNS protocol can be configured on a per-name server basis in the ResolverConfig document, allowing for flexible configuration of DNS resolution. The '--mode=reboot' option has been removed from the talosctl apply-config command; by default, configuration is applied without a reboot. Most configuration changes don't require a reboot; the documentation lists the changes that do. Talos now supports running native BGP routing instances on the host via embedded GoBGP servers, configured with BGPInstanceConfig documents. Talos Linux, a specialist Linux distribution for running Kubernetes, has been updated to version 1.12.0. This release introduces new network configuration documents, new user volume types, and updates to disk encryption: "Welcome to the 1.12.0 release of Talos. What's new? The Kubernetes API server in Talos has been updated to use a more secure set of TLS cipher suites by default. This is in line with a set of best practices documented in CIS 1.12 benchmark. New field in UserVolumeConfig - volumeType that defaults to partition, but can be set to directory. When set to directory, provisioning and filesystem operations are skipped and a directory is created under /var/mnt/'name'. The directory type enables lightweight storage volumes backed by a host directory, instead of requiring a full block device partition. Talos versions prior to v1.12 used the state of PCR 7 and signed policies locked to PCR 11 for TPM based disk encryption. Talos now supports configuring which PCRs states are to be used for TPM based disk encryption via the options.pcrs field in the tpm section of the disk encryption configuration. Quantian Scientific Computing Environment
A Knoppix/Debian variant tailored to numerical and quantitative analysis, Quantian was a remastering of Knoppix, the self-configuring and directly bootable CDROM that turns any PC or laptop (provided it can boot from CDROM) into a full-featured Linux workstation. The most recent version was based on clusterKnoppix and adds support for openMosix, including remote booting of light clients in an openMosix terminal server context. Quantian was an extension of Knoppix and clusterKnoppix from which it takes its base system of about 2GB of software, along with fully automatic hardware detection and configuration. However, Quantian differs from Knoppix by adding a set of programs of interest to applied or theoretical workers in quantitative or data-driven fields.
